International audienceObservation of a wide corpus including dictionary entries for the word “chômage” demonstrates that there has been a progressive shift in common usage from être/mettre. ... en chômage to être/mettre... au chômage, and that the change dates back to the end of the 1970s. Rather than a replacement of the preposition “en” with “au,” we are seeing a change in tendency, since the use of “en” has not disappeared. This article seeks to account for the variation between the two constructions (at diachronic, contextual, and individual levels) in terms of the social construction of meaning.
